French Dalkia wins contract to operate 40 MW biomass plant in Canada

Nov 18, 2013 - French energy company Dalkia, a joint venture company of power utility EDF (EPA:EDF) and water and waste services provider Veolia Environnement (EPA:VIE), said on Friday it had been selected to design, operate and maintain a 40-MW biomass plant in Fort St. James, Canada.

Under the contract, the French company will also manage the wood biomass supply and preparation.

Dalkia and Canadian fund Fengate Capital Management Ltd have secured financing for the project, provided by the fund and a group of banks.

The plant, which will be built by Iberdrola Engineering and Construction, a unit of Spanish Iberdrola (MCE:IBE), will use up to 307,000 metric tons of biomass a year and will cover the annual energy requirements of 40,000 households.

The project will create some 250 jobs during the construction phase and 80 new direct and indirect jobs during the 30-year operation period, and will generate for Dalkia a revenue of over EUR 600 million (USD 810.5m) in total.
