A total of 29 micro, small and medium-sized (SMEs) enterprises in Chile's region of Biobio were awarded about CLP 317 million (USD 483,000/EUR 453,000) towards the installation of renewable energy projects.

The projects represent a total installed capacity of 730.98 kW, Chile's energy ministry said this week. They include 202.48 kW of power systems and 528.5 kW of thermal energy projects.

The funding was awarded under the second edition of the Sustainable SMEs competition, which is financed by the regional government.

According to the announcement, 96.5% of the projects use some solar technology.

Energy minister Andres Rebolledo commented that currently, thanks to the distributed generation law, energy consumers can become producers and increase their competitiveness through self-consumption of non-conventional renewables and through exporting the surplus energy to the national grid.
