Singapore-based renewables developer and subsea engineering company G8 said today it has been picked as the provisional contractor to install a 65-MW floating solar plant within a hydropower complex in Ghana.

The company has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with the BUI Power Authority Ghana to deliver the project on a full turnkey basis.

The planned photovoltaic (PV) system, dubbed GPM-65, will be installed at the 400-MW BUI Hydro Dam built on the Black Volta river to lift the power generation capacity of the hydropower station. It will use G8's marine engineered mooring and flotation technology and will be equipped with an advanced power management system. The project offers the option of adding energy storage capacity.

The solar plant will be an extension to an existing 5-MW array. It is planned to become operational by the closing quarter of 2023.

At present, G8 has close to 3 GW of renewable energy and sub-sea transmission projects under development in Asia. The company is active in Indonesia, South Korea and India.
