Slovakia-based geothermal drilling technologies specialist GA Drilling and Switzerland-based ZeroGeo Energy GmbH have decided to join forces for the development of a 12-MW geothermal power plant in Germany utilising hot dry rock (HDR) technology.

The companies have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project which is named Projekt THERMO and will be located in Lower Saxony. It is described as the first of many deep geothermal and geothermal energy storage projects the two partners intend to collaborate on in Europe.

Under the pact, GA Drilling will contribute its drilling technology, while ZeroGeo will be the operator of the project.

“This initial project underpins a focus on accessing geothermal anywhere in the world with the ability to provide deep geothermal drilling regardless of location,” the companies said in a statement released by the Swiss firm on Monday.

ZeroGeo develops geothermal storage and baseload electricity projects by deploying geothermal HDR technology. The company is also working on a geothermal storage and baseload electricity project in Switzerland -- Projekt TIEF.

Founded in 2008, GA Drilling has two patented drilling technologies, namely PLASMABIT and ANCHORBIT.
