US solar shingle provider GAF Energy on Tuesday said it will build a solar roofing testing facility and conduct a new round of Building Integrated Solar (BIPV) testing.

The project is supported by a grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE), which was announced as part of a USD-71-million (EUR 66m) investment in research, development and demonstration projects to advance the US solar supply chain.

GAF Energy’s initiative seeks to develop, test and validate a combination of optical, thermal, and energy models for roof-integrated solar shingles to better understand the benefits solar shingles provide in heating and air conditioning efficiency for the home.

GAF Energy, a Standard Industries company, is partnering with Sandia National Laboratories on the project and is currently looking for a location for the new testing facility.

GAF Energy offers nailable solar shingles and recently cut the ribbon on a new manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Texas.
