Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum Oy on Tuesday said that it has already started planning work on a third biogas plant in Sweden that will be capable of producing 133 GWh of biomethane from waste streams per year.

No final investment decision (FID) has been made yet but the planning process is firmly proceeding to secure all necessary permits and the land use plan with the municipality, the company noted in a press statement.

The planned facility will be located in the southern municipality of Horby. It will have the capacity to handle up to 500,000 tons of a wide range of raw materials per year, mostly residual products and agricultural waste.

The site, which has been granted funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet investment programme, is expected to become operational at the end of 2026.

Gasum is already building two other biogas plants in Sweden. The first facility, located in Gotene, is expected to begin production at the end of 2024. Earlier this year, the company kicked off onsite work on a second project in Borlange after taking a FID in early February.

The Finnish firm’s overall plan is to construct five plants in Sweden over the next years as part of its ambition to achieve a capacity of 7 TWh of renewable gas per year in the Nordic market by 2027.
