The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is providing a USD-12-million (EUR 10.3m) grant to a project in Cook Islands envisaging the installation of batteries to store solar power.

Specifically, GCF is providing additional financial assistance to the ongoing Cook Islands Renewable Energy Sector Project, which is co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Union and the government of Cook Islands.

The GCF grant will finance the installation of three units of an energy storage system with a preliminary capacity of 3 MW and 12 MWh. This system will allow for an additional 6 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to be deployed and hooked to the grid.

Up to five PV power facilities will be built under the current project, according to a statement from ADB.

The Cook Islands has set a goal to deliver renewable energy to all its islands by 2020.
