GDF Suez starts construction of biomethane demo plant near Lyon

Nov 1, 2013 - The foundation stone of a biomethane demonstration plant to be built close to Lyon in France was laid on October 25 as part the GAYA research project led by French gas utility GDF Suez (EPA:GSZ).

GDF Suez coordinates the project, however, it is only one of the 11 partners sharing an investment of EUR 47 million (USD 63.6m). The platform's completion is scheduled for 2015. The initiative is aimed at demonstrating the viability of second-generation biomethane.

Second-generation biomethane is produced by gasification from ligno-cellulosic biomass (wood and straw). GDF Suez is developing this technology, and it should be available by 2017.
