GE Renewable Energy will deliver two 85-MW variable speed pumped storage turbines for the Tauernmoos pumped hydro storage power plant in Austria.

The General Electric (NYSE:GE) unit said on Tuesday it has been selected by Austrian national railway operator OBB to design, manufacture and supply the turbines. GE Renewable Energy will also be in charge of installation supervision and commissioning, with its responsibilities further covering power transformers and power frequency converters, as well as part of the balance of plant.

OBB’s new pumped hydro storage power plant, located in the Stubachtal valley, will make use of the height difference between two reservoirs and is intended to help ensure sustainable, demand-oriented supply of train traction power from hydropower.

According to GE, this will be the first new-build pumped hydro storage facility globally using fully-fed variable speed technology and will be one of the most flexible.
