Bison Energy advances work on 100-MW solar project in New Zealand
Sep 19, 2024 14:38 CESTSaft, a unit of French energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE), has been contracted to deliver its battery energy storage system (BESS) technology for a project owned by New Zealand-based Genesis Energy.
The deal calls for Saft to equip a 100-MW/200-MWh facility at the Huntly Power Station, the country’s largest thermal power complex on New Zealand’s North Island.
Saft said on Thursday it will engineer the battery storage system as a complete turnkey solution based on 70 of its Intensium Shift+ lithium-ion battery containers. The site is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2026.
The Huntly BESS will be installed as part of Genesis Energy’s plan to add more firming and flexibility assets in order to respond to the volatility of hydropower, wind and solar power generation, as well as to disruptions in power supply.
Saft noted that Huntly will be its third utility-scale energy storage project in New Zealand.
