Gentari Sdn Bhd, the clean energy platform of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, has teamed up with the Malaysian state of Sarawak to develop a hydrogen hub in the coastal region of Bintulu.

Gentari said today its subsidiary Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd has signed a heads of agreement with SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE), a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, for the joint development of the project, named Sarawak H2 Hub. To be managed by a joint venture formed by Gentari and SEDCE, the hub is planned to supply green hydrogen for downstream activities in the area.

“Malaysia is well-placed to be a clean hydrogen hub in ASEAN, led by states such as Sarawak with its ample sustainable resources,” said Michele Azalbert, Chief Hydrogen Officer at Gentari.

“We believe that hydrogen is the way forward and we are committed to contributing towards Sarawak’s Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, in addition to the Malaysian government’s vision and objectives in the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR),” added Azalbert.

Sarawak aims to become a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027.
