Georgia Power has installed more than 4,000 solar panels at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the electricity provider, a subsidiary of Southern Co (NYSE:SO), said this week.

Georgia Power started work to integrate efficiency and sustainability measures onto stadium's campus in 2014. The solar project was developed in three phases that together are expected to generate about 1.6 million kWh in the first year of operation. The electricity will flow back onto the grid, which, the company says, allows for integrating renewables, while maintaining a high level of reliability.

The solar project uses a range of technologies such as bifacial panels, clear-backed panels that are translucent, and a modular racking system developed in collaboration with Georgia Tech. It is described as one of the largest and most advanced integrated solar facilities at a sports venue in the US.
