German consortium inaugurates solar plant in Spain

Sep 30, 2011 - German utility company RWE AG (ETR:RWE) announced today the official opening of solar thermal power plant Andasol 3 in the Spanish province of Granada by a consortium of five German companies.

The consortium established the company Marquesado Solar SL for the realisation of the Andasol 3 project. RWE’s renewable division - RWE Innogy as well as Rhein Energie own jointly 25.1% in the project firm, Stadtwerke Muenchen holds 48.9%, while Ferrostaal and Solar Millennium (ETR:S2M) have a 13% shareholding each.

Andasol 3, whose construction was completed in the summer, will start operations in the upcoming weeks. The facility will generate electricity of some 165 million kWh annually and save around 150,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The three Andasol power plants are to supply solar energy to some 500,000 people.

The consortium aims to increase Andasol’s capacity to 7.5 billion kWh per year by 2025, which will be enough to satisfy the energy demand of Munich, where currently 1.35 million people live.
