German Energy Turnaround Index hits record low in Q4 2013

Jan 24, 2014 - The German Energy Turnaround Index fell further in the fourth quarter in 2013 to 92.7 points from 94.4 points in the previous quarter, representing its all-time low level, the German Energy Agency dena said.

The grid operators and energy consumers were most sceptical in the fourth quarter in 2013 as the index fell by 7 points by both groups, dena said.

The industry's sentiment in terms of their outlook for the next 12 months deteriorated compared with the third quarter and the index fell by 12.9 points to 48.9. More than 90% of the polled companies call for an urgent reform in the renewable energy law (EEG).

Morale by politics, organisations and opinion leaders improved slightly by 0.8 points to 116.6 points, compared with the previous quarter.

The index, issued by dena and consultancy firm Ernst & Young, measures the sentiment in German industry, politics and society regarding the energy transition on a scale of 0 to 200. Some 320 companies, cities and organisations were surveyed in the latest measurement. The index has been issued quarterly since June 2012.
