German engineering firms back energy transition, criticise energy policy

Oct 21, 2013 - Germany's engineering sector believes the energy transition will spur investments and innovation, according to a survey by the German engineering association VDMA.

VDMA polled 390 companies in the period from August to mid-September in its second energy transition barometer.

Half of those polled perceive the energy transition as an investment and innovation engine. However, 85% criticised the current legislation and the energy transition policy. Over 90% are unsatisfied with the grid expansion and the cooperation between the federal government and the regional authorities.

Some 32% are concerned about the strong increase in electricity costs and 37% see the energy shift as a threat to their competitiveness.

According to VDMA, the industry needs reliable energy policy ensuring investments in the sector and focusing on the development of energy efficiency.
