German Geo-Net to study Uzbekistan's wind potential - report

Jun 9, 2014 - Uzbekenergo has awarded a contract for the analysis of the country's wind energy potential to German green energy consultancy firm Geo-Net Umweltconsulting GmbH, Azerbaijani Trend News Agency said on Sunday, citing a source from Uzbekistan's utility .

Geo-Net will study the wind potential in six regions of the country for the development of utility-scale wind power plants capturing wind speeds of 100 metres per second. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

The task includes the preparation of a map of the country's winds, which is planned to be ready by the summer of 2015, followed by detailed meteorological studies on two areas chosen by both companies. Based on the results, Geo-Net will conduct feasibility studies for the development of wind power plants.

Uzbekenergo plans to invest around USD 250 million (EUR 183.4m) in the construction of a wind farm with a capacity of between 50 MW and 100 MW by 2020, according to the report. The utility is currently installing 750-kW of wind power capacity in the Bostanlik district of the Tashkent region.
