German govt gives green light to three power lines for wind energy transport

Dec 19, 2012 - Germany’s Federal Government approved the construction of three major power lines with a total length of 2,800 km (1,740 miles), which are to be used for the transportation of wind electricity from the northern to the southern parts of the country.

What is more, parts of the existing network are to be optimised for the fluctuation of green power feed-in.

The German provinces expressed their willingness to transfer the panning of big power lines to the federal government and thus reduce the time for planning and construction to four from ten years. The routes of the power lines are to be determined in 2014. The costs for the two projects are estimated at EUR 10 billion (USD 13.3bn).

The government also decided to increase the funds for building renovations aimed at improving their energy efficiency by EUR 300 million to EUR 1.8 billion in 2013. This means that house owners are to be able to rely on grants of up to EUR 5,000.
