The Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr eV association, which aims to speed up the development of a hydrogen economy in Germany's Rhein-Ruhr region, said last week that the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has become a new member of the group, further strengthening the network.

The association consists of over 50 members from business, science, and municipalities, seeking to position the Rhine-Ruhr area as a key European hub in the hydrogen sector through international collaboration.

The addition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is further driving the development of a hydrogen economy and cross-border exchange, Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr said.

The significance of ports as hubs for hydrogen import and distribution is high and the association has already attracted the key central ports in Duisburg, Rotterdam, and now Antwerp-Bruges, it said.

“The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is actively preparing for the challenges of the energy transition and is ready to receive, handle, and distribute the first hydrogen derivatives within this decade. Membership in the Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr network enables us to contribute our hydrogen infrastructure and expertise, further expand it, and, in cooperation with the Rhein-Ruhr region, continue to advance a smooth hydrogen value chain,” port representative Richard Schroeter commented.

According to the statement, Antwerp-Bruges is one of the largest European seaports and the second-largest chemical cluster in the world.
