German renewable energy union says new law makes faster energy turnaround impossible

(ADPnews) - Jun 30, 2011 - The German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) said on Wednesday the government has wasted an opportunity to accelerate the transition to clean energy with the changes it has made to the Renewable Energy Act (EEG).

Some striking mistakes such as the limitation of onshore wind power have been removed from the new law, which the Parliament is expected to pass on Thursday, BEE said. However, the obstacles that the new legislation creates for bioenergy have remained, according to the federation. The law as a whole is still deficient, BEE president Dietmar Schuetz said.

BEE criticised the way the new law handles the market integration of renewable energy, saying both renewable energy and consumers are put at a disadvantage. In the federation's view, consumers should be given a chance to play an active role in Germany's strategy to stop using nuclear energy and switch to renewable energy sources.
