German retailer Edeka to install 11-MWp solar systems on logistics hubs

German retailer Edeka plans to build photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 11 MWp on the roofs of logistics centres in Germany by the end of June 2025.

The facilities will be installed on logistics hubs in Berbersdorf, Saxony, Gochsheim, Lower Franconia, Marktredwitz, Upper Franconia as well as the newly established fresh-manufacturing site Hirschaid in Upper Franconia.

The systems will generate about 10,170 MWh of green electricity annually, which is sufficient to meet the needs of over 2,000 four-person households. Most of the output can be used directly on-site. Around 85% of the power will cover the operational energy needs such as cooling, lighting, and other technical systems, the company said.

The initiative is expected to save nearly 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

The installations will consist of nearly 26,000 modules covering a total area of about 51,000 square metres, which is equal to about seven football fields.

The systems will be installed by German electrical engineering firm Reichhard Elektrotechnik.
