German solar thermal expansion slows in 2013

Feb 18, 2014 - Germany expanded its solar thermal collector area by 1.02 million sq m (252 acres) last year, which represents a slowdown from 2012, green energy groups BDH and BSW-Solar said.

The collector area expanded by 1.15 million sq m in 2012.

About 17.5 million sq m of German land is currently taken up by solar thermal collectors, but the rate at which the heating market is being modernised is still not quick enough to meet the country's ambitious green energy goals, BDH and BSW-Solar said.

They urged the government to make available sustainable funding in order to accelerate the expansion of solar heat.
