Germany has seen the installation of 10,200 MW of new solar capacities in the country by the end of August, thus already surpassing the nation’s solar expansion goal for 2024, says a report presented by the German Institute of the Renewable Energy Industry (IWR).

The installed amount is slightly higher than the 10,100 MW recorded in the same period in 2023.

Germany currently accommodates 4.5 million solar facilities in operation with a combined installed capacity of around 93,200 MW. The country had set itself a goal of achieving 88,000 MW this year.

IWR’s forecast to have 15,000 MW to up to 20,000 MW of new wind and solar capacity connected to the grid in 2024 remains unchanged, partly due to the addition of offshore wind turbines.

“If the trend continues until the end of 2024, more than one million new solar systems with a capacity of more than 15,000 MW will be installed, as in the previous year,” said IWR head Norbert Allnoch.

However, Allnoch highlighted in the statement that despite the strong trend in Germany, China is far ahead of any other country with 123,500 MW of new solar capacity installed in the first seven months of the year and a 2024 target of 250,000 MW.

More details about the solar expansion process in Germany are available in the table below:
