German state-owned railway company Deutsche Bahn AG has teamed up with Siemens Mobility to develop and test a hydrogen-powered train as part of the effort to replace diesel multiple units (DMUs) operating in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

The company said it plans to take the train on a one-year trial run on tracks around the city of Tuebingen in 2024. The project will also include the development of a hydrogen filling station and a production system utilising only green electricity.

Siemens Mobility will build the train using its Mireo Plus multiple units as the basis. The Mireo Plus H will have a range of 600 kilometres (372.8 miles) and a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99.4 mph), according to the press release.

The German federal ministry of transport and digital infrastructure will financially support the project through the national innovation programme for hydrogen and fuel cell technology (NIP 2).
