German commercial storage system maker Tesvolt GmbH today announced a contract to supply an energy storage system with a total capacity of 2.68 MWh in Rwanda.

The system will provide emergency power for water pumps in an agricultural project in the African country, where power supply fails several times a day for between 5 and 45 minutes.

The storage system and a 3.3-MW solar power plant are being constructed by Germany-based system integrator IdeemaSun Energy.

Tesvolt, which uses lithium iron phosphate technology, will supply a total of 134 fully assembled storage units for the 44 water pumps. The storage system will act as a mini-grid in the event of power cuts, allowing the solar plant to continue running, the company said.

The project will also use 402 Sunny Island charge controllers from SMA Solar Technology.

Simon Schandert, Tesvolt director of engineering, said that due to the frequent power outages a key criterion in the call for tender was that the storage system is able to absorb power from the 3.3-MW solar array and release it again as quickly as possible.
