GESS International announced on Monday the start of work on two biogas plants in North Carolina, each representing an investment of some USD 33 million (EUR 28.8m).

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the Wilson County Green Energy Biogas Park in Stantonsburg on November 8 and for the Union County Green Energy Biogas Park in Monroe on November 14. Construction for both biogas production plants is to start in the first quarter of 2019 and they are expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2020.

The plants are to utilise 160,000 tonnes of swine waste and 80,000 tonnes of green biomass to produce 500,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas per year, enough to power 6,800 homes.

“GESS is developing biogas projects that are inclusive of local communities by creating a new waste-to-energy revenue stream for farmers,” GESS’s Representative Seth Daughety said, adding that such projects help mitigate the environmental issues associated with hog farming.
