Gestamp Wind Brazil arm gets nod to install 28.8-MW wind farm

Jan 18, 2013 - Brazil's ministry of mines and energy yesterday authorised Gestamp Eolica Agreste, the Brazilian unit of Spanish wind sector player Gestamp Wind, to install and operate the 28.8-MW Cabeco Preto III wind farm as an independent energy producer.

The facility, to have a total 16 turbines of 1.8 MW each, will be built in the Joao Camara municipality of Brazil's northeastern Rio Grande do Norte state.

Gestamp Eolica Agreste will also be responsible for the construction of the farm's transmission system, which will consist of a substation and a 138-kV transmission line.

The venture is scheduled to be launched by December 31, 2015.

The farm's operator will need to become member of Brazil's energy clearing house CCEE in order to be able to commercialise the produced electricity.

Independent power producers are able to sell their surplus energy and distribute energy to large consumers, paying concessionaires for the use of transmission lines. The main difference between the independent producers and concessionaires in Brazil is that the first operate at their own risk, mainly based on free competition, and the second are subject to specific public service rules, including participation in sharing obligations and advantages of the interconnected energy system.
