Dutch energy storage developer Giga Storage will develop a project that will add 600 MW/2,400 MWh of energy storage capacity in Belgium and create Europe’s largest battery site.

Called Green Turtle, the facility will be installed in Dilsen-Stokkem and will be in proximity to a new 380-kV high-voltage substation, Giga Storage said recently. Once in operation, the system will store wind and solar power and inject it to the grid during periods of low generation, thus supporting the country in lowering its reliance on coal and gas.

Giga Storage estimates that the battery complex will be able to cover the average energy consumption of 330,000 families daily. The company has already submitted a planning application and expects to commence building activities this year.

Giga Storage aims to have 3 GW of battery energy storage capacity in Belgium by the end of the decade. Last September, it set foot on the Belgian market by unveiling plans for a 1,200-MWh battery in the province of Limburg, just across the Dutch border.
