Dutch energy storage developer Giga Storage BV has secured a permit to build a 600-MW/2,400-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) park in Belgium, aiming to complete the project in 2028.

The approval ensures that financing for the scheme can now be arranged, Giga Storage said on Friday, adding that it expects to launch construction activities in 2025.

Known as Giga Green Turtle, the complex will be made up of 720 battery units and is set to become Europe’s biggest battery site. The large-scale park will be installed in Dilsen-Stokkem, Limburg province, to store wind and solar power and inject it into the grid during periods of low generation. Its operation will cover the average energy consumption of 330,000 families daily, Giga Storage estimates.

Giga Green Turtle will be built on land that previously hosted a zinc factory. The site was acquired by the battery developer from the former factory’s owners.

Amstelveen-based Giga Storage aims to realise 3 GW of BESS projects in Belgium by the end of the decade. Its first project in the country is the Blue Marlin scheme, which will add 300 MW of battery storage capacity in Limburg's Kinrooi municipality, just across the Dutch border.
