Globeleq breaks ground on 15-MW solar-plus-storage plant in Mozambique Cuamba Solar in Mozambique

Independent power producer (IPP) Globeleq Africa Limited has started construction work on a 15-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) park with a 2-MW/7-MWh energy storage system in Mozambique.

The company is building the USD-32-million (EUR 26.4m) Cuamba Solar plant alongside Mozambican state-owned electricity utility EDM and Source Energia, the renewable energy platform of private equity boutique Source Capital.

Globeleq expects to get USD 19 million of debt funding from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) for the project. An additional USD-7-million grant from the Private Infrastructure Development Group’s viability gap funding (VGF) grant facility should be received as well, along with USD 1 million from CDC Plus to enable an affordable tariff and the energy storage system.

Located in the Tetereane District of the city of Cuamba, Niassa province, the solar project is the country's first IPP with an integrated utility-scale energy storage system.

EDM will buy the electricity generated by the plant under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Mozambique is aiming to achieve universal energy access by 2030, Globeleq noted.
