Google LLC has entered into power purchase agreements (PPAs) with two Japanese energy providers securing 60 MW of solar capacity dedicated to providing electricity to the company's data centres in Japan.

The tech giant said on Thursday the PPAs, the first of their kind for Google in the country, were signed with Clean Energy Connect Inc, a partner of Itochu Corp (TYO:8001), and Shizen Energy.

Under the agreement with Clean Energy Connect, the company will build roughly 800 small-scale solar farms with a combined capacity of 40 MW spread across several grid regions in Japan.

Shizen Energy will add the remaining capacity with a 20-MW utility-scale solar project dedicated to the tech firm in Inzai city, Chiba prefecture.

Google expects the solar plants to be up and running within four years, emphasising the company's commitment to invest nearly USD 690 million (EUR 635.7m) into sustainable infrastructure in Japan.
