Kyrgyzstan plans to build a 30-MW solar power plant in the northern part of the country, Radio Azattyk's website reported on Wednesday, citing deputy minister of energy and industry Turatbek Dzhunushaliev.

The deputy minister made the announcement at a scientific conference in Bishkek.

The solar park will be located in the Panfilov district of Chuy Province. The government has allocated an area of 70 ha (173 acres) for the construction of the facility. It plans to realise the project, whose cost is put at USD 64 million (EUR 57.2m), through private investment.

Solar energy is expensive, Dzhunushaliev said, with the cost per kWh of electricity being around KGS 30 (USD 0.44/EUR 0.39), based on preliminary calculations. By comparison, the consumer tariff for electricity in Kyrgyzstan is KGS 0.77 per kWh for the first 700 kWh a month and KGS 2.16 after that, Radio Azattyk said. The industrial tariff is KGS 2.24.
