Angolan government officials inaugurated on Tuesday the 26.14-MW Saurimo solar park in the Lunda Sul province, extreme east of Angola.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Water, the photovoltaic (PV) project required an investment of EUR 38.8 million (USD 41.8m) to be realised.

Featuring 44,850 solar panels, Saurimo is expected to be capable of generating enough clean electricity to meet the demand of around 171,000 people.

The Saurimo solar farm is part of a group of seven parks totalling 370 MWp, located in the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, Bie, Lunda Norte and Moxico. The ministry expects the whole bundle to be up and running by the end of this year.

Once all these parks are operational, the country will be able to cut its diesel consumption by around 1.4 million litres.
