Green energy represents 60% of Portugal power consumption in 2013 - report

Jan 15, 2014 - Electricity generated from renewable energy sources accounted for almost 60% of the total consumption in Portugal in 2013, according to data of local environmental non-governmental organisation Quercus quoted by news agency Lusa.

Thus, consumption of green energy in the country jumped 20% last year.

Hydro power production more than doubled in Portugal in 2013, Quercus data showed. At the same time, wind power output rose by 20%, while photovoltaic production grew by 25% in annual terms. As a whole, the generation of electricity from renewable energy represented 32% of the total in Portugal's mainland in 2013, against 27% in 2012.

Last year Portugal managed to reduce its dependence on electricity imports, as the amounts of imported electricity decreased 2.8 times.
