Green energy share in Jordan exceeds 20% - report

Renewable energy meets more than 20% of the power needs in Jordan, putting the kingdom among the leaders in the energy transition in the Arab world, said the secretary-general of the Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC), Muhammad Al-Taani.

Jordan's geographical location is seen as an economic catalyst for its future in the energy transition in the Middle East and its role in developing electricity infrastructure and interconnections between the Arab countries, Al-Taani said as cited by Jordanian news agency Petra. The statement was made during a lecture at the Royal Jordanian Command and Staff College on the future of renewable energy and green hydrogen in the Arab world.

According to Al-Taani, the Arab world is expected to invest about USD 1 trillion (EUR 885bn) in renewables and green hydrogen by 2040 as countries in the region, including Jordan, have taken steps to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

AREC was created by 16 Arab countries in 2011 in the Jordanian capital of Amman to represent all stakeholders in the renewable energy sector in the Arab World. Its aim is to promote the use of green energy and investments in this area.

The Hashemite kingdom has set the goal of expanding the share of electricity from renewables to more than 50% by 2030 as the country seeks to strengthen the utilisation of local energy sources, the minister of energy and mineral resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, told Petra in November.
