Green hydrogen project at UK's Felixstowe port gets govt support

Port of Felixstowe Green Hydrogen Project is among the 15 successful projects that will be supported by the UK government’s GBP-240-million (USD 296m/EUR 273m) Net Zero Hydrogen Fund.

The winning projects of the fund’s first round were announced today as part of the government's Powering Up Britain plans on energy security.

The project, proposed by ScottishPower and Hutchison Ports, aims to deploy 100 MW of electrolytic hydrogen production at the Port of Felixstowe by 2026. Felixstowe, the UK’s busiest port, is part of one of eight new freeports in England, designated by the UK government.

The planned hydrogen hub there will supply a range of demands. It will help Hutchison Ports and Freeport East reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative could also assist surrounding industries in decarbonising their operations and meeting local demand for hydrogen liquefaction and ammonia production. The location is also ideal for refuelling facilities for road hauliers and rail freight operators.

The Net Zero Hydrogen Fund provides development and capital co-funding for low-carbon hydrogen production projects.
