Danish renewable energy developer GreenGo Energy Group on Monday unveiled plans for a huge green energy project in Mauritania that will involve 60 GW/190 TWh of hybrid solar and wind generation and 35 GW of electrolysis capacity.

The company has submitted an application to the country’s Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines for the development of the project, named Megaton Moon, which will be visible from space.

The project is planned to be implemented in states, with a first pilot stage potentially in operation by 2028 and the final stage by 2033-2035.

The endeavor aims to transform the capital Nouakchott and the country by providing abundant low-cost green power and desalinated water to facilitate local desert farming, green industrial and urban development.

The entire project would be able to produce 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen a year or 18 million tonnes of green ammonia.

“Megaton Moon embodies climate action with an ambition to deliver 1% of the total global green hydrogen demand by 2050 to reach NetZero,” said GreenGo Energy chief executive Karsten Nielsen.

The CEO emphasised the advantages of the northwestern African country for green hydrogen production. "Mauritania holds some of the best solar and wind resource cross in the world, large areas of suitable flat land and coastal proximity for water and shipping. Green hydrogen production cost is half of Northern Europe, potentially lower. Furthermore, the region has some of the most operator-friendly fiscal policies on the continent, as documented by a history of significant oil and gas investments by world energy majors. Proximity to load centers in EU is an additional benefit.“ he said.

The European Commission recently launched a new initiative to help Mauritania develop its green hydrogen industry.

Last week, renewables developer CWP Global said it is making progress on a planned 30-GW green hydrogen development in Mauritania.
