Spain-based Grenergy Renovables SA (BME:GRE) will deploy the technology of China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (SHE:300750), or CATL, in the 1.25-GWh fourth phase of its Oasis de Atacama solar and storage project in Chile.

The companies have signed an agreement that calls for the Chinese group to supply more than 220 of its EnerX battery containers for the scheme, Grenergy said on Tuesday. The Spanish developer intends to launch construction of the huge project’s fourth phase, called Gabriela, in the coming weeks.

The EnerX containers will be made up of over 7,100 modules using lithium iron phosphate battery technology.

Oasis de Atacama is a five-phase solar and storage project spanning multiple sites in Chile’s northern regions of Tarapaca, Antofagasta and Atacama. Last month, Genergy unveiled a USD-128-million (EUR 118.4m) deal to buy new assets that will become part of the massive project and expand its battery storage component to 11 GWh from 4.1 GWh. The combined capacity of the photovoltaic (PV) farms that will be installed within the complex will double from 1 GW to 2 GW.

Oasis de Atacama will be built at a cost of some USD 2.3 billion. Its first phase is planned to go online by end-2024 and the remaining will be commissioned gradually between 2025 and 2026.
