Germany’s H-TEC SYSTEMS has been selected to supply its 1-MW PEM electrolyser ME450 for a green hydrogen production and clean mobility project in the Spanish island of Fuerteventura.

The ME450 device will be used by Spanish fuels distributor IR Maxoinversiones to produce green hydrogen for sale at its public hydrogen refuelling stations in the Canary Island, the German electrolyser manufacturer said in a press release on Tuesday.

“The Canaries is a region with high potential for renewable energies from solar and wind. This region is importing fossil fuels for mobility and there is a great opportunity to decarbonize with green hydrogen,” said Alexander Detke, Team Lead Sales at H-TEC SYSTEMS.

H-TEC SYSTEMS’ electrolyser can produce 450 kg of highly pure hydrogen of grade 5.0 per day, which can be directly used in fuel-cell vehicles or for power-to-X applications, according to the manufacturer. To make the hydrogen green, IR Maxoinversiones will rely on wind power and its own solar photovoltaic plant to power the electrolyser.

The H-TEC SYSTEMS ME450 will be installed in the Fuerteventura town of Puerto del Rosario. IR Maxoinversiones expects hydrogen production to begin in the summer of 2025.

“At IR Maxoinversiones, we are convinced that green hydrogen will play a fundamental role in the future of the Canary Islands. Our commitment is to lead the development of this technology and contribute to a more sustainable future for the islands,” added Ismael Ruiz, CEO at IR Maxoinversiones.

IR Maxoinversiones operates a network of public hydrogen refuelling stations across Fuerteventura. It also owns the H2GO RENT car rental service with electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, has its own fleet of hydrogen-electric trucks and offers advisory services on energy transformation.
