The recent incident that occurred at the site of the Hai Long offshore wind project’s Changhua onshore substation in Taiwan has resulted in at least one fatality, according to a new update by the project company.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the Hai Long Offshore Wind Project Changhua onshore substation site on August 20th. We extend our sincerest condolences to all the injured and their families, and we express our deepest sadness for the loss of life,” says a statement released by Hai Long Offshore Wind.

The developer adds that alongside onshore substation contractor TECO Electric & Machinery, local authorities and judicial bodies, it continues to investigate the incident.

As previously reported, 17 people were hospitalised due to a supposed leak of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the fire suppression system at the substation site.

The 1,022-MW Hai Long project will be located 45 km-70 km off the Changhua coast in the Taiwan Strait. It is owned by Northland Power, Gentari and Mitsui & Co.
