US wastewater management Heartland Water Technology Inc on Friday said it is creating a division for gasification solutions with the acquisition of Cogent Energy Systems.

Cogent Energy Systems has developed an ultra-high temperature, ionic gasifier, called HelioStorm, that can process solid, liquid or gaseous feedstocks, turning organic material into hydrogen-rich syngas. The syngas can be used to produce electricity, reformed into liquid fuels, or processed for hydrogen recovery, it is explained in the announcement.

Cogent Energy Systems was founded by plasma scientist Peter Kong and former US Department of Energy (DoE) senior executive Abraham Haspel. The company’s gasifier is the result of many years of research at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

"Our goals were ambitious. We wanted a modular gasifier powered by renewable energy, capable of processing a wide range of waste materials and delivering a rich syngas that requires little to no clean up. This is what we delivered," commented Kong.

Heartland said its new division will focus on residuals management and recovering value from waste streams, with the HelioStorm system allowing it to provide onsite service for sewage treatment plants, landfills and manufacturing.
