Finnish utility Helen Oy has teamed up with MAN Energy Solutions and its proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers manufacturing subsidiary H-TEC Systems for a project to build a 3-MW green hydrogen production plant close to Helsinki's district heating network and Vuosaari Harbour.

The output of the facility, estimated at up to 1,350 kilograms per day, will be delivered to a nearby hydrogen refuelling station via pipeline and distributed to industrial customers or other refuelling stations using containers. The waste heat generated in the production process will be utilised in Helen’s district heating network, a recent joint statement says.

This is the first project of this type for Helen which aims to increase its expertise to meet the needs of large-scale hydrogen production and enhance the flexibility of the entire energy system.

MAN Energy Solutions will be in charge of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the hydrogen production section of the plant, including equipment, installation and commissioning. The remaining work will be done in co-operation with Helen and Helen's engineering partner.

The plant will be equipped with three ME450 PEM electrolysers supplied by H-TEC Systems. The systems will be powered by electricity from Helen’s renewable energy portfolio.

“The 3H2 project is the first of its kind in the world by combining four different sectors, electricity, heating, transportation and hydrogen as well as flexibility between them,” said Sari Mannonen, senior vice president of new business and hydrogen at Helen.
