Greek energy group Helleniq Energy, former Hellenic Petroleum, intends to equip its Thessaloniki refinery with solar panels and battery storage units and might also produce green hydrogen at the site, Energypress reports.

The photovoltaic (PV) park will be installed in Thessaloniki’s wider area and will cover the entire power consumption of the refinery. A battery storage facility will ensure that the excess solar power is stored.

According to the report, the oil company is also considering using the solar power output to produce green hydrogen as an option of chemical power storage. The plan envisages installing electrolysers to produce green hydrogen and using it as electricity via fuel cells when needed.

The plan is part of Helleniq Energy’s efforts to make its refineries energy-independent and respond to the power supply issues over the recent years.

Helleniq Energy aims to have 1 GW of renewables in operation by 2026 and 2 GW by 2030, a development that will enable a 50% reduction in its carbon footprint by 2030. At end-2022, the Greek group owned 341 MW of installed capacity.
