Hitachi ABB Power Grids, a joint venture between Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd (TYO:6501) and Swedish-Swiss electrical engineering company ABB Ltd (NYSE:ABB), will supply the main electrical infrastructure to connect a solar project in Angola to the transmission network.

The company said it secured the contract from M.Couto Alves SA, part of Portuguese EPC business MCA Group. MCA is developing the solar project with its joint-venture partner Sun Africa LLC, a US renewable energy company.

According to Hitachi ABB, the initiative represents the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Sub-Saharan Africa. Without giving details on the solar portion of the project, the company said it will design, supply the main power equipment, and carry out testing and commissioning services.

“We are contributing pioneering technology to enable MCA to integrate more renewables and electrify rural area, while maintaining a stable network. Our role is to develop the project from idea to energization - ultimately, shaping a reliable and sustainable energy future for Angola,” said Niklas Persson, managing director of Hitachi ABB Power Grids’s Grid Integration business unit.

The initiative is funded under the Swedish government-backed export credit system.
