Howoge to install 50 MW of solar on Berlin rooftops

German housing company Howoge Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH is partnering with municipal utility Berliner Stadtwerke to install solar systems with a capacity of up to 50 MW on rooftops of buildings in its Berlin portfolio.

Howoge, one of the six municipal housing companies in the German capital, aims to equip all structurally suitable roofs in its existing portfolio with solar panels by 2033. The planned facilities are estimated to produce power sufficient to supply 20,000 two-person households, the housing company said on Monday.

Under the collaboration, the installations will be built by Berliner Stadtwerke. Upon completion, the systems will be owned by Howoge, which will manage their operation.

Berliner Stadtwerke has already installed solar systems with a combined capacity of about 4 MW on behalf of Howoge. Overall, the housing company aims to achieve climate neutrality for its entire portfolio by 2045.

Currently, Berlin has solar installations, including balcony units and large systems, with a combined capacity of 283 MW. Howoge’s latest project will expand this capacity by over 16%. The project contributes to Berlin’s goal to become climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest.
