Hungary’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) park, a 233-MW plant in the northern part of the country, has officially started operations, the Hungarian government announced last week.

Located in the municipality of Mezocsat, in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen county, the complex was installed by domestic developer PolSolar Kft and will be supported under the country’s feed-in-tariff (FiT) scheme.

The PV farm consists of 466,000 panels spread over a 440-ha (1,087-acre) area, which are expected to generate around 372 GWh of electricity annually. The output will help lower Hungary’s reliance on natural gas and will contribute to the national goal of lifting the share of renewables, Energy Minister Csaba Lantos said in a Twitter post. At present, the country imports 76% of its energy.

According to local media, the project was realised at a cost of over HUF 90 billion (USD 260.4m/EUR 243.8m), part of which came from PolSolar’s own resources and some were secured from a bond sale.
