Infener to set up 20-MW green hydrogen hub in Germany
Sep 17, 2024 14:59 CESTHungarian oil-and-gas group Mol Plc (BPSE:MOL) has teamed up with US hydrogen solutions specialist Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) to build a EUR-22-million (USD 23.2m) green hydrogen production facility at its Danube refinery in Szazhalombatta, Hungary.
In a joint statement today, the partners said that the new facility will use Plug Power’s 10-MW electrolysis unit, resulting in an output of around 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Mol will use the hydrogen at its Danube refinery to produce fuels, and displace grey hydrogen it currently uses. At present, natural gas-based hydrogen production represents one-sixth of the Mol group’s carbon dioxide emissions, according to the statement.
The new green hydrogen facility is expected to start operation in 2023.
Green hydrogen production is in line with Mol’s sustainability strategy, which includes goals such as a 30% lower carbon footprint by 2030, and carbon-neutral operations by 2050.
