Hy2gen Canada Inc, a unit of German hydrogen plants developer Hy2gen AG, said Friday it has been awarded renewable electricity supply for its Courant green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Baie-Comeau in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The company has been selected by Quebec's Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy (MEIE) to receive a block of electricity for the project, subject to agreement with Hydro-Quebec, which will supply the power.

Courant envisages the production of 237,000 tonnes green ammonia per year with an electrolyser capacity of 300 MW. The location offers short transport routes to off-takers that can use the ammonia to decarbonise chemicals production, while the steady supply of power from the hydroelectric-based power grid will enable a constant operation of the electrolysis process, the developer says.

According to the announcement, the Courant project can now start front-end engineering. Subject to a final investment decision, construction could be launched in the second half of 2026, with first green ammonia production expected in 2029, depending on Hydro-Quebec's connection schedule.
