Britain’s Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (AQSE:HUI) said today that it expects to secure a grant of EUR 300,000 (USD 321,360) to fund the pilot phase of a project to build a waste plastic to hydrogen facility in the Irish county of Longford.

HUI’s unit Alister Future Technologies (AFT) Ltd is anticipated to be awarded the grant under the EU Just Transition Fund EU Community and Enterprise Grants Scheme, which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU. The funds will be awarded upon meeting certain deadlines, the company noted in a statement.

The pilot scheme will operate on a smaller scale to allow testing and demonstrating the technology, the successful completion of which will be a pre-requisite for the development of a full scale facility.

HUI announced having secured the terrain for the Irish waste-to-hydrogen plant in March 2023.

“I am delighted to see the European Union recognise the potential of our waste plastic to hydrogen technology. Years of hard work are paying off,” said HUI’s chief executive Aleksandra Binkowska.

HUI specialises in a technology to turn non-recyclable mixed waste plastic into hydrogen and other carbon-free fuels, new materials or distributed renewable heat.

The company is currently considering expanding its business inorganically through the potential acquisition of biofuels firm Essential Energy Holding Group Corp.
