Bulgaria's NEK opens tender for new turbines at pumped storage plant
Sep 18, 2024 13:50 CESTBulgarian hydrogen solutions company Hydrogenera recently presented the very first 1-MW alkaline electrolyser in the Balkans and is getting ready to announce several “key” partnerships outside of its home market.
On the occasion in late April, the company showcased the megawatt-scale electrolyser it developed as part of a contract awarded by a customer. The deal was signed at the end of 2023 and covers the design, manufacturing and integration of the device weighing over 10 tonnes.

The event was attended by more than 200 investors and representatives of Bulgaria’s large industries, including energy, metalworking, waste management and others.
According to Hydrogenera representatives, the presentation signals possible mass production in the future in response to increasing demand for such products. This, however, will only complement Hydrogenera’s main activities in developing and realising projects for its customers’ specific needs.
“The needs of the market revolve around 1-MW modules because they provide the required scale, whilst maintaining flexibility. They are easier to service and retain the high efficiency associated with the company’s products,” a Hydrogenera representative stated. The electrolyser presented at the event is expected to soon become part of the country’s first operating hydrogen plant.
At the same time, Hydrogenera hopes to announce certain cooperations that should facilitate the company’s entry into foreign markets.
You can read more about Hydrogenera in an interview with the company’s founder and CEO Dragomir Ivanov, and chief financial officer Dimiter Banov, published late last year.
