Hyphen agrees more green ammonia off-take pacts in Namibia

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Pty) Ltd, the preferred bidder for the development of a USD-10-billion (EUR 9.1bn) green hydrogen project in Namibia, has signed non-binding green ammonia off-take pacts with two industrial companies.

Hyphen announced in a statement today that it entered into a couple of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) under which up to 500,000 tonnes and 250,000 tonnes a year, respectively, will be supplied to an unnamed major chemical company and Korean hydrogen producer Approtium.

“Although Hyphen’s primary focus is the supply of hydrogen into Europe, and Germany in particular, South Korea is expected to emerge as a key market in the green hydrogen sector, in which Approtium will be a major player,” commented Marco Raffinetti, CEO of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy.

The two new MoUs have been added to an existing one envisaging the supply from 2027 of up to 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year to RWE Supply & Trading (RWEST). Thus, Hyphen has now concluded pacts for annual volumes exceeding 1 million tonnes of ammonia, which is the project’s targeted supply for 2027. The company’s plan is to double the output of the facility by 2029 and start exporting to international markets.

The project in question is planned to be developed in phases on about 4,000 sq km of land within the Tsau //Khaeb National Park. Initially, it will involve the addition of 5 GW to 6 GW of renewable energy capacity to power 3 GW of electrolysers.
